Do you know the Symptoms of R.S.V
Overview:
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a type of infecting viruses that causes lung infection to us. This infection can occur at any age and only the healthy peoples recover it in one to two weeks. However, RSV infections can be severe in a few individuals it includes the infants, young children (age — below 12) and older adults (age — above 40). Children who have a wheezing problem while in infancy have a huge risk of developing asthma. RSV infections may be quite seasonal. The season varies from year to year, but these infections are most common between December and February.
Symptoms of R.S.V
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes infection to our lungs and respiratory tracts. It is very common that most children got infected with this virus by the age of 2. The respiratory syncytial virus can also infect adults whose immunity is weak.
RSV can cause severe infection to some people, especially to premature babies, older adults, infants and adults who have heart and lung disease, or anyone with a very weak immune system.
They are some symptoms from which we can recognise the virus clearly, they are as follows:
Signs and symptoms of respiratory syncytial virus infection most commonly appear about four to six days after exposure to the virus. These virus signs are very similar to the signs of a cold.
· Congested or runny nose
· Dry cough
· Low-grade fever
· Sore throat
· Mild headache
- sneezing
- decreased appetite
- fever
- Wheezing, rapid breathing and other breathing difficulties
- irritability and decreased activity in infants
- short, shallow and rapid breathing in infants
- blue colour to the skin ( cyanosis )
Prevention:
The best way to prevent the spread of RSV is to follow good hygiene practices.
Hand washing: Always wash your hands after coming into contact with anyone who has symptoms like cough and cold and before coming into contact with a child. This can also help children learn the importance of washing hands.
Keeping surfaces clean: The risk of spreading RSV can be reduced by cleaning surfaces such as toys, tables, and handles.
Coughs and sneezes: Children should be encouraged to cover their mouth when coughing or sneezing, preferably with a handkerchief, or to sneeze between palms, to avoid spreading droplets to the others.
Other tips include:
- discouraging sharing of cups and other utensils
- limited contact with those who have cold-like symptoms
- avoiding smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke
For infants who are at a higher risk of complications if they contract RSV, monthly RSV antibody injections may be recommended during the RSV season, which tends to be during the winter months in few countries.
These were the few symptoms and preventions from the infectious virus. Friends, you should be well prepared for this type of virus. Friends you need to have a check-up if you are having any symptoms like this.
