Indian food is not about only curry and spices. Because there are almost 29 states and each its own flavor. You can not just name it as curry.
Indian Spices: So here i am trying here to tell few interesting things about Indian cuisine.
- Potato is the one of the main vegetable we used to eat daily. But potato is not originated in India. Portuguese introduced potato which is called batata.
- Vasco-DE Gama the first person to discover the route to India and introduces the Indian spices to the world.
- Basil is originated in India and Persia. In india it is known as holi tulsi. It has huge health benefits.
- In ancient time cardamom was used as medicine in India and later Greek and roman were used it as a aid of digestion.
- Garlic were used in Egypt to increase the work power of man to build pyramid.
- Turmeric is one of the ingredient to prevent heart disease, was originated in india almost 4000years ago.
- In ancient Egypt, cumin was one of the spices used for embalming mummies. And it came to India from Mediterranean.
- It is believed that saffron was originated in Iran. Both Cleopatra and Alexander the Great are said to have used saffron in the bath. Now it is cultivated jammu & kashmir and himachal Pradesh of india.
- Cloves are the native of muluku island in indonesia commonly used as spices. In india cloves are used as medical purpose to take care of digestion.
- Most of the spices comes from northern india.
- But kerala is known as Garden of spices of India.
- The US is the major importer followed by China, Vietnam, the UAE, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, the UK, Germany, Singapore and Sri Lanka from India.
- India exported spices worth US$ 2.42 million.
- Fennel known for its strong aroma and it is originated in Mediterranean region.
